Look at the photo above. Just look at it. What is even going on there? It sure looks like it’s hot nacho cheese being poured on top of Cheetos but that’s just too horrifying. It can’t be.

 

But it is! Adriana Gonzalez, pictured, is only one of many vendors selling the concoction at drive-thru convenience stores in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley. And it’s $1. That’s the cruel fact of food policy in America. We provide food stamps to people who are often too busy to cook healthy meals, or can’t afford the ingredients, or who just don’t know enough about nutrition to put a healthy diet together. So they do the rational thing: they eat cheap fast food from drive-ins and convenience stores and reap the horrible health consequences. That’s why, across the country, obesity is more common among the poor than the rich. Being healthy is too expensive, in both time and money. Only later do the costs of unhealthy diets — diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems, to name a few — begin to take their toll.
