What the British eat, by social class

Well-educated Brits are more likely to eat game birds than their compatriots, while meat pies are more popular with the British middle class. Among the wealthy, the best educated prefer polyunsaturated fats such as vegetable oils, those with less education use diet spreads, and the group in the middle cook with butter. Those with moderate wealth and education consume the most hard alcohol. Those with the least education and wealth eat more hamburgers, kebabs, whole fishes and whole milk, which might indicate the tastes of Britain’s immigrant population. And everyone likes pudding.

These and other conclusions are drawn from the chart above by the Centre for Diet and Activity Research in Cambridge. The size of each circle shows the relative, not the absolute, popularity of each type of food among each social group. So, for example, smoothies are much more popular among the British elite than they are in other groups, but that does not mean the United Kingdom’s wealthy and well-educated eat smoothies three meals a day.
